Cyclist killed by cougar after smacking it with his bike to scare it off, officials reveal
The second cyclist ran, but the cougar dropped his first victim and pounced on him, killing him and dragging him back to what appeared to be its den, Captain Alan Myers, of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police, said. The men had been riding together near North Bend, around 30 miles east of Seattle. It was the first fatal cougar attack in the state on 94 years.

Hounded by graft probe, fearing safety Malaysia's Najib seeks protection
By Fathin Ungku KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's former prime minister Najib Razak fears for his safety and has asked for police protection, his spokesman said on Sunday, a day after the ex-leader complained over the conduct of police searching properties for evidence of corruption. Having ruled Malaysia for nearly 10 years, Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, have been barred from leaving the country after his coalition's surprise defeat in an election on May 9. Najib has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing, but his image hasn't been helped by his wife's reputation for lavish spending.

Texas Muslims mourn slain Pakistani exchange student
Houston's Muslim community gathered to offer prayers Sunday at the funeral service for a 17-year-old Pakistani exchange student killed in a mass shooting at her southeast Texas high school. About 1,000 people, many with Pakistani roots and wearing traditional Muslim dress, converged on an Islamic center in Stafford to honor Sabika Sheikh, whose body was brought by hearse to the somber service from Santa Fe, the nearby small rural town where a student murdered 10 people including eight students. Men lined up in rows offered traditional mourning prayers as Sheikh's coffin, draped in the green and white flag of Pakistan, was brought into a small, cramped sanctuary.

Donald Trump misspells Melania's name as he welcomes first lady home from hospital
Donald Trump welcomed his wife Melania home to the White House on Saturday after a week in hospital for kidney treatment - but managed to misspell her name as "Melanie" in a hastily deleted tweet. The embarrassing gaffe does at least resolve one mystery. The length of hospital stay had raised questions about whether the first lady's condition was more complicated than first revealed. "Great to have our incredible first lady back home in the White House," wrote Mr Trump on Twitter. "Melanie is feeling and doing really well. Thank you for all of your prayers and best wishes!" The message was quickly replaced with a message that spelled the first lady's name correctly but is unlikely to have done anything for marital harmony. Screengrab of the offending tweet Credit: Twitter It also sparked a string of humorous responses on social media. I know Donald Trump is trying to upstage the Royal Wedding, but I think it’s rude that he got married to “Melanie” just five days after Melania vanished.— Palmer Report (@PalmerReport) May 19, 2018 Mrs Trump's quiet return was as sudden as her trip to hospital. The White House had made no mention of any medical issue despite a string of recent public appearances. She was admitted to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre near Washington on Monday, when she had an embolisation procedure to treat an unspecified kidney condition the White House described as benign. Her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, declined to release additional details, citing Mrs Trump's right to privacy. Donald and Melania Trump's 9 most awkward relationship moments "The first lady returned home to the White House this morning," she said in an emailed statement. "She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits. "Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out." On Tuesday, the president tweeted that his wife would be released in "2 or 3" days, but Thursday and Friday passed without word from the White House on her whereabouts. Mr Trump had visited her during her first three days in hospital. But he did not visit on Thursday or Friday, sparking speculation that the first lady had been discharged. The first lady had earlier announced on Wednesday via Twitter that she was "feeling great" and looking forward to going home, but gave no indication of when that might happen. Profile | Melania Trump On Friday, she tweeted about the deadly school shooting at a Houston-area high school but did not update her followers on her medical situation.
