Senator slams bank gun policies, threatens consumer complaint
By Katanga Johnson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. senator on Thursday criticized Citigroup Inc and Bank of America Corp's restrictions on lending to firearm makers and sellers, saying the new policies were wrongly politicizing banking services. Speaking during a hearing on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Republican Senator John Kennedy said he planned to personally file complaints with the U.S. consumer watchdog regarding the firearm policies.

Military plane with 100 on board crashes in Algeria
Around 100 military personnel were on board the Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane, a military source told AFP, asking not to be named. Algeria has suffered a string of military and civilian aviation disasters. Two military planes collided mid-flight in December 2012 during a training exercise in Tlemcen, in the far west of the country, killing the pilots of both planes.

Fly above Jupiter's terrifying north pole in new NASA video
Jupiter's north pole is unsettling, at best. It's comprised of one giant storm encircled by eight spinning cyclones — all of which have larger diameters than the moon. Fortunately, this nightmarish place orbits as far as 600 million miles away from Earth. But for those willing, NASA scientists have made a 3D tour through the tempestuous clouds. SEE ALSO: NASA's TESS is going to be your new favorite space mission Unveiled Wednesday at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, the 1 minute and 20-second plunge through what appears to be hell's inferno is composed of images taken by a camera aboard the Juno spacecraft, which is currently orbiting the planet. Describing Jupiter's north pole (or atmosphere generally) as hell, however, is misleading, as it's quite cold. The bright yellow clouds are around 9 degrees Fahrenheit, while the dark red clouds plummet down to minus-181 degrees Fahrenheit, according to NASA. Juno caught these images of Jupiter's north pole during its during its fourth close pass by the planet. The camera used, JIRAM, is an infrared camera, so it can capture clouds 45 miles down from the cloud tops during either day or night (infrared is a non-visible form of light). Prior to Juno's arrival at Jupiter in 2016, Jupiter largely remained a mystery. An artist's conception of the Juno spacecraft orbiting Jupiter.Image: Nasa"Before Juno, we could only guess what Jupiter’s poles would look like,” Alberto Adriani, Juno co-investigator from the Institute for Space Astrophysics and Planetology in Rome, said in a statement. “Now, with Juno flying over the poles at a close distance it permits the collection of infrared imagery on Jupiter’s polar weather patterns and its massive cyclones in unprecedented spatial resolution.” So far, Juno has mapped about a third of the planet, having travelled some 122 million miles during 11 close passes by Jupiter's roiling clouds. Juno will dive in for its twelfth (terrifying) pass on May 24. WATCH: Scientists found a weird galaxy without dark matter

Braced for air strikes on Syria, some airlines re-route flights
By Jamie Freed SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Some major airlines were re-routing flights on Wednesday after Europe's air traffic control agency warned aircraft flying in the eastern Mediterranean to exercise caution due to possible air strikes into Syria. Eurocontrol said in a notification published on Tuesday afternoon that air-to-ground and cruise missiles could be used over the following 72 hours and there was a possibility of intermittent disruption to radio navigation equipment. U.S. President Donald Trump and Western allies are discussing possible military action to punish Syria's President Bashar Assad for a suspected poison gas attack on Saturday on a rebel-held town that had long held out against government forces.

Florida school shooter wants to donate inheritance to survivors
Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz wants to donate his inheritance -- which could run to hundreds of thousands of dollars or more -- to the bereaved families and survivors of his attack, his lawyers said Wednesday. Cruz walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the south Florida city of Parkland on February 14 and opened fire at students and staff with an AR-15-style semi-automatic weapon. At a court hearing on Wednesday, Broward County Judge Elizabeth Scherer sought to determine whether Cruz -- who has so far been represented by public defenders -- is able to pay for his own defense.

American Warplanes Are Falling From the Sky
Two of the crashes involved U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, underscoring concerns that the naval aviation fleet is overworked, undertrained and poorly-maintained. The spate of crashes began on March 14, when a Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter plunged into the sea near Naval Air Station Key West in Florida. On March 15, an Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopter struck the ground in western Iraq, killing all seven airmen aboard.

A look at members of the public invited to the royal wedding
LONDON (AP) — Kensington Palace has announced that politicians and world leaders won't be attending Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding. But 1,200 members of the public — many involved with charities or community groups — have been invited to the grounds of Windsor Castle for the May 19 celebration. That will give them a chance to see the royals arrive at the chapel and to see the carriage procession after the wedding ceremony.

Russia-US tensions: Cabinet gives May the go-ahead for Syria strike 'to deter further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime'
Theresa May's cabinet has agreed on the need to "take action" to deter use of chemical weapons following an emergency meeting at Downing Street. President Donald Trump had warned Russia of imminent military action in Syria, declaring missiles “will be coming” and denouncing Moscow for standing by Syria’s president, but on Thursday night the White House said that "no final decision" had been made about what Washington will do. Mr Trump, Ms May and French President Emmanuel Macron have been in regular contact as they plot a course of action, with Mr Macron saying France has "proof" the Syrian government carried out the chemical attack which killed potentially doxens.
