Australian Woman Discovers Message In A Bottle Sent In 1886An Australian woman happened upon what experts believe is the oldest message in a bottle ever found, dating back to 1886. Tonya Illman of Perth said she walking along the beach on Wedge Island in January when she spied the old glass bottle and picked it up. Using basic German language skills and Google Translate, Kym Illman figured out the person who dispatched the bottle wanted to know where and when it was found.

Official US watchdog says top Trump aide Conway broke the lawTop White House aide Kellyanne Conway twice broke the law by endorsing Republican candidates while acting in her role as a taxpayer-paid civil servant, a government watchdog said Tuesday. The Office of the Special Counsel -- a government ethics body unrelated to Robert Mueller's investigation -- said the 51-year old who ran Trump's successful election campaign violated the Hatch Act on two occasions. In a report to the White House, the watchdog said Conway "impermissibly mixed official government business with political views about candidates in the Alabama special election" in December 2017.

Oldest message in a bottle found after 132 years

Oldest message in a bottle found after 132 yearsThe world’s oldest known message in a bottle – thrown off a German ship on June 12, 1886 – has been found by a family on a remote beach  in Australia after their car became stuck in the sand. The message was written in German on paper which was bound and tied with a string and kept in a nineteenth-century Dutch gin bottle. The note stated it was thrown off the sailing barque Paula, about 600 miles off coast of Western Australia.  It was found 132 years later by Tonya Illman, who spotted an object sticking out of the sand while walking with her family near Wedge Island, 100 miles north of Perth.  "It just looked like a lovely old bottle, so I picked it up thinking it might look good in my bookcase," she told ABC News. Ms Illman turned the bottle over and a damp piece of paper tipped out. "My son's girlfriend was the one who discovered the note when she went to tip the sand out," she said. "We took it home and dried it out, and when we opened it we saw it was a printed form, in German, with very faint German handwriting on it." The family took their find to Ross Anderson, a maritime archaeology expert at the Western Australian Museum, who confirmed the gin and paper were authentic. He then contacted colleagues in Germany and the Netherlands who tracked down handwriting samples from the captain's entries in the ship's meteorological journal. “Incredibly, there was an entry for June 12, 1886, made by the captain, recording a drift bottle having been thrown overboard,” Dr Anderson told ABC News. "The date and the coordinates correspond exactly with those on the bottle message. The handwriting is identical in terms of cursive style, slant, font, spacing, stroke emphasis, capitalisation and numbering style." From the 1860s, the German Naval Observatory ran an experiment to examine ocean currents in which it urged captains to toss bottles overboard containing a form which recorded the date, the ship's coordinates and details about its route. Ms Illman has donated the discovery to the Western Australian Museum. The second-oldest bottle to be found was 108 years old.

Wreckage found of World War Two aircraft carrier USS Lexington after 76 years

Wreckage found of World War Two aircraft carrier USS Lexington after 76 yearsThe wreck of a United States aircraft carrier which helped to stop the Japanese advance across the Pacific in World War II has been discovered in deep waters 500 miles off Australia’s north-east coast.  The USS Lexington, or “Lady Lex”, one of America’s first aircraft carriers, was found about 1.7 miles beneath the surface of the Coral Sea after a six-month search led by Paul Allen, a billionaire who co-founded Microsoft.  The vessel, which fought in the Battle of the Coral Sea - the first ever battle involving aircraft carriers  - was deliberately sunk in May 1942 by another US vessel after taking crippling blows from two Japanese torpedoes and two bombs. During the four-day battle, 216 crew members aboard the Lexington were killed and went down with the ship and the remaining 2,735 were evacuated before it was sunk to prevent it being captured. The ship is considered a war grave and will not be raised. The Lexington’s rough location was known but it has not been seen since it sunk 76 years ago. Video footage captured by an underwater drone showed  the carrier’s anti-aircraft guns and some of its 35 aircraft, including Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bombers and Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters. The vessel and aircraft appeared to be in remarkably good condition. The wreck was found two miles beneath the surface of the sea Credit: AFP photo courtesy of Paul G Allen On one of the aircraft, an emblem of the cartoon character Felix the Cat could be seen as well as four miniature Japanese flags which  reportedly indicated "kills". Admiral Harry Harris, the head of the US military's Pacific Command and the son of a sailor who was evacuated, paid tribute to Mr Allen and the crew of the Research Vessel  Petrel for their remarkable find. This handout photograph obtained March 5, 2018 courtesy of Paul G. Allen shows wreckage from the USS Lexington, a US aircraft carrier which sank during World War II, that has been found in the Coral Sea Credit: AFP "We honour the valour and sacrifice of the Lady Lex's sailors - and all those Americans who fought in World War II - by continuing to secure the freedoms they won for all of us," he said. “This is our heritage.” Preserved aircraft could be clearly seen on the seabed Credit: AFP photo courtesy of Paul G Allen The four-day battle has been credited with helping to save Australia from a full-scale Japanese invasion. Mr Allen’s search missions have discovered numerous wrecks in recent years, assisted by developments in underwater search technology. Paul Allen Underwater Exploration His teams have discovered the wreck of the USS Ward, credited with firing America’s first shots in World War II, the Japanese battleship Musashi, and the ship’s bell from the British battle cruiser HMS Hood, which was sunk by the German warship Bismark in 1941. “As Americans, all of us owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who served and who continue to serve our country for their courage, persistence and sacrifice,” Mr Allen said following the Lexington’s discovery.

North Korea 'willing to give up nuclear weapons' as summit agreed between Kim Jong-un and South Korean president

North Korea 'willing to give up nuclear weapons' as summit agreed between Kim Jong-un and South Korean presidentNorth Korea has vowed to halt nuclear and missile tests if it holds talks with the US, in a major diplomatic breakthrough that could lead to a peaceful resolution of military tensions on the Korean peninsula. The pledge was made during an unprecedented meeting between top South Korean security officials and the reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, on Monday evening. In another significant development, North and South Korea have agreed to hold their first joint summit in over a decade in late April, according to Chung Eui-yong, the leader of the South's two-day delegation to the North. US President Donald Trump welcomed the move, talking up the chance of progress as he praised the "serious effort" being made by the three nations. In a sign of  softening rhetoric, Mr Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning: "Possible progress being made in talks with North Korea. "For the first time in many years, a serious effort is being made by all parties concerned. The World is watching and waiting!" However, Mr Trump added: "May be false hope, but the US is ready to go hard in either direction!" The summit, between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un, will be held in the border village of Panmunjom, in the highly militarised zone between the two countries who are still technically at war. Mr Chung said that North Korea had expressed its willingness to talk to the United States “in an open-ended dialogue to discuss the issue of denuclearisation and to normalise relations with North Korea”. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un suprised many by personally hosting the South Korean delegation for dinner Credit: AFP Pyongyang had indicated that it would not need to keep its nuclear weapons if military threats against the country are resolved and it receives a credible security guarantee, said the South Korean envoy. The North Koreans, who dined with the South Korean delegation for four hours at their national party headquarters, had also vowed never to use nuclear and conventional weapons against their southern neighbours, Mr Chung added. The promise to freeze its nuclear programme, in an apparent reversal of earlier statements that the US demand to denuclearise was “ridiculous”, opens the door for talks with the Trump administration, which has previously stated it will negotiate “under the right conditions". Former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, left, and then South Korean President Kim Dae-jung met in Pyongyang in 2000 Washington has yet to respond to North Korea’s overture but will likely do so after senior officials are debriefed in full by the South Korean envoys later this week. Meanwhile Mr Chung said the South and North had agreed to set up a “hotline” between their leaders to allow “close consultations and a reduction of military tension.” Possible progress being made in talks with North Korea. For the first time in many years, a serious effort is being made by all parties concerned. The World is watching and waiting! May be false hope, but the U.S. is ready to go hard in either direction!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 6, 2018 The April summit will be only the third in recent memory. The past two, in 2000 and 2007, led to a series of cooperative projects between the two Koreas but not, ultimately, peace.
