Turkey says France could become 'target' for backing Syria Kurds
By Tuvan Gumrukcu ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey said on Friday that a French pledge to help stabilize a region of northern Syria controlled by Kurdish-dominated forces amounted to support for terrorism and could make France a "target of Turkey". French backing for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG militia, has angered Ankara at a time when it is fighting the YPG in northern Syria and considers it a terrorist organization. President Tayyip Erdogan said France had taken a "completely wrong approach" on Syria, adding that he exchanged heated words with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, last week.

British officials search inbound plane from Moscow
Britain said Saturday that border officials had searched an incoming Aeroflot plane, a move Russia called an act of "blatant provocation" in the ongoing diplomatic spat between London and Moscow. Britain said it conducts routine checks on aircraft to protect the UK from organised crime and people attempting to bring harmful substances into the country. The Russian embassy in London said Friday's search on a scheduled plane arriving from Moscow at London Heathrow Airport was "extraordinary".

Dalai Lama calls on Tibetans to remain united as India drifts toward China
By Abhishek Madhukar DHARAMSALA, INDIA (Reuters) - The Dalai Lama called on his people to remain united as the Tibetan community gathered on Saturday in a small hill town to mark 60 years of political asylum in India - although just one federal minister appeared at the event. The "Thank You India" event had been scheduled for India's capital, New Delhi, but was shifted to Dharamsala, a small town in the country's north where Tibetans run a government in exile, as India tries to avoid a confrontation with China, which views the Dalai Lama as a dangerous separatist. Officially, New Delhi says its policy toward the Dalai Lama remains the same, and the Tibetan government in exile says it moved the event to Dharamsala out of respect for India's foreign policy needs.

Starbucks coffee must carry cancer warning in California, judge rules
Starbucks and other coffee vendors must carry cancer warnings in California, a Los Angeles judge has ruled. The companies have less than a fortnight to challenge the decision and could face millions of pounds in fines if unsuccessful. The decision relates to a chemical called acrylamide, a byproduct of roasting coffee beans that is present in high levels in brewed coffee. In California, companies are required by law to warn consumers if their products contain chemicals that could cause cancer. A non-profit group claimed acrylamide was in that category and brought a lawsuit against some 90 coffee retailers including Starbucks. Elihu Berle, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge, ruled that the companies had failed to show there was no significant risk from a carcinogen produced in the roasting process. Starbucks logo Credit: AP Photo/Lisa Poole The judge said: “Defendants failed to satisfy their burden of proving by a preponderance of evidence that consumption of coffee confers a benefit to human health.” The lawsuit was filed in 2010 by the Council for Education and Research on Toxics (CERT). It calls for fines as large as $2,500 per person for every exposure to the chemical since 2002 at the defendants’ shops in California. Given the state has a population of nearly 40 million any fines, which would be decided in a later stage of the trial, could be huge. Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s and other coffee retailers did not comment on the decision according to Reuters, which reported the news. A statement from the National Coffee Association (NCA) read: “Cancer warning labels on coffee would be misleading. The US government’s own dietary guidelines state that coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle.”
