Police link two package bombs in Texas to earlier attack
By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Two package bombs exploded miles apart in the capital city of Texas on Monday, killing a teenager and injuring two women in attacks that Austin police linked to a deadly blast earlier this month. In all three cases, a package was left at the front of a residence and exploded after an unsuspecting victim picked it up or tried to open it, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley told reporters. "We are looking at these incidents as being related," Manley said, adding that federal investigators were among those looking for suspects and a possible motive for the attacks.

CDC doctor's disappearance: Agency shares update on missing employee Timothy Cunningham
The acting director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday that an employee who went missing over a month ago was not recently passed up for a promotion, as police had previously reported. Timothy Cunningham, a highly regarded epidemiologist at the CDC, disappeared without a trace after he left work mid-day on Feb. 12, complaining of feeling ill. Atlanta Police Department Major Michael O'Connor had initially said that on the morning of Cunningham's disappearance, the 35-year-old doctor spoke with his supervisor about a promotion that he didn't receive and expressed disappointment to several coworkers about being passed up for the position.

After deadly Nepal crash, Bangladeshi airline defends pilots
By Gopal Sharma and Ruma Paul KATHMANDU/DHAKA (Reuters) - A Bangladeshi airline said on Tuesday its two pilots aboard the plane that crashed in Nepal killing 49 people had both received special training to land at Kathmandu airport and had successfully handled previous flights. The airline and airport authorities in Kathmandu have blamed each other in the aftermath of Monday's disaster, the Himalayan nation's worst since the 1992 crash of a Pakistan International Airlines aircraft killed 167 people. Flight operator US-Bangla Airlines said it was too early to blame anyone, after a transcript of the pilots' radio conversation with ground control in Kathmandu revealed confusion over the designated runway.

Saudi general 'may have been tortured to death' during Ritz-Carlton crackdown
A Saudi general may have been tortured to death and several wealthy businessmen were allegedly abused in captivity at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s recent crackdown on powerful figures in Saudi Arabia, according to a newspaper report. More than 200 businessmen, princes and government officials were detained in November and imprisoned at the luxury hotel in Riyadh in what the Saudi government said was an anti-corruption drive. According to the New York Times, some of the powerful detainees may have suffered abuse at the hands of their captors as they were coerced into agreements to hand over billions of dollars to the Saudi government in return for their freedom. Saudi Arabia has dismissed the allegations of abuse as “absolutely untrue”. The most dramatic accusation involves Major General Ali al-Qahtani, an aide to a senior Saudi prince seen as a potential rival to the 32-year-old Prince Mohammed, who died in government custody in mid-December. The report was published shortly before Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrives in the US for meetings with the Trump administration Credit: AFP PHOTO / Saudi Royal Palace / BANDAR AL-JALOUD Sources told the newspaper that the general’s “neck was twisted unnaturally as though it had been broken” and that his body had burn marks which appeared to be the result of electric shocks. General Qahtani was taken to hospital in November but was reportedly returned to his interrogation after being seen by doctors. The government has not offered an official explanation for how he died. The general’s death had been widely reported in Arab and Iranian media previously but not in detail. The US report comes shortly before Prince Mohammed, known by his initials “MBS”, is due in Washington for meetings with the Trump administration. General Qahtani was an aide to Prince Turki bin Abdullah, a former governor of Riyadh who is from a rival line of the Saudi royal family to Prince Mohammed. Prince Turki was himself detained during the November crackdown on allegations of corruption. He was eventually released. The rise of MBS A further 16 detainees were allegedly left in need of medical treatment after their abuse. Some reportedly told family members they had been beaten, deprived of sleep, or interrogated with hoods over their heads. “All allegations of abuse and torture of those investigated during the anti-corruption proceedings are absolutely untrue,” a Saudi official said.

Stephen Hawking, who has died aged 76, was Britain's most famous modern day scientist, a genius who dedicated his life to unlocking the secrets of the Universe. Born on January 8, 1942 -- 300 years to the day after the death of the father of modern science, Galileo Galilei -- he believed science was his destiny. Most of his life was spent in a wheelchair crippled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a form of motor neurone disease that attacks the nerves controlling voluntary movement.

Sarah Sanders Simply Refuses To Say 'Russia' When Quizzed On UK Poisoning
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pointedly avoided saying the word “Russia” on Monday when very specifically questioned about that country’s culpability in the poisoning last week of a former Russian spy with a deadly nerve agent. British officials have determined that Sergei Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia, were poisoned with a nerve agent developed in Russia. British Prime Minister Theresa May announced Monday that it was “highly likely” that Russia was responsible for the attack. “We must now stand ready to take extensive measures,” May said.

Brennan Gilmore, 38, said in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Virginia that Alex Jones and his conservative website Infowars published stories that damaged his reputation and led to threats against him, including a letter that contained suspicious powder. Despite Brexit, Britain wins EU support on nerve agent attack
By Robin Emmott and John Irish BRUSSELS/PARIS (Reuters) - Germany and France expressed solidarity with Britain on Tuesday after London accused Moscow of a nerve agent attack on British soil, but beyond strong vocal EU support, diplomats said there was little appetite for more economic sanctions on Russia. Despite tensions over Britain's decision to quit the bloc next year, EU leaders, top officials and NATO reacted in quick succession after British Prime Minister Theresa May's speech in the British parliament on Monday on the poisoning of a former Russian double agent, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter. German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke to May on Tuesday, a day after French President Emmanuel Macron, and both leaders condemned the attack in statements on Tuesday.

Shepard Smith Isn't Letting Trump Off The Hook For Gun Control Reversal
Fox News host Shepard Smith called out President Donald Trump on Monday for backpedaling on his vow to reform gun control. After publicly stating earlier this month that the National Rifle Association had little power over him, the president tweeted Monday that the White House would support NRA-approved gun control measures, which include arming teachers and a limited expansion of background checks. Trump said there was not “much political support” for raising the age limit to purchase firearms from 18 to 21 years old.

Elon Musk predicts flights to Mars will start in early 2019
Flights to Mars will begin early next year, the entrepreneur Elon Musk has predicted as he said man must colonise other planets before “World War Three”. Mr Musk, whose company SpaceX is designing a rocket for interplanetary travel, estimated that “up-and-down flights” to the red planet should start in the first half of 2019. During a rare question and answer session, Mr Musk called for creative thinking as he said everything from “iron foundries” to “pizza joints” and “night clubs” would be needed on Mars. He predicted little appetite for the first interplanetary trips, saying that like Sir Ernest Shackleton’s adverts for early Antarctic exploring there would be a “good chance you’ll die”. But the US billionaire added that creating human bases on other planets could help “regenerate life” on Earth if it is turned to "radioactive rubble" by another war. Mr Musk offered his thoughts of space travel in an appearance at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas on Sunday. Future space exploration After making his money through PayPal, Mr Musk created the electric car company Tesla and the rocket and spacecraft company SpaceX. Mr Musk discussed SpaceX’s Big Falcon Rocket [BFR], which it is hoped will transport people to Mars, during his appearance. “We’ll be able to do short up-and-down flights probably sometime in the first half of next year,” Mr Musk said. He made the prediction after admitting some of his timelines had proved “optimistic” in the past. Asked about the infrastructure needed on Mars, Mr Musk said first it would be “fundamentals without which you cannot survive” such as power stations and blast domes to grow crops. He added: “And then really there’s going to be an explosion of entrepreneurial opportunity because Mars will need everything from iron foundries to pizza joints to night clubs.” A Falcon 9 rocket is launched with Spain's PAZ, a radar-imaging satellite, and two SpaceX test satellites for global broadband Credit: Barcroft Mr Musk said colonisation of other planets would help protect humankind if another major war broke out in the coming decades. “I think a moon base and a Mars base that could perhaps help regenerate life back here on Earth would be really important and to get that done before a possible World War Three,” Mr Musk said. “Last century we had two massive world wars, three if you count the cold war. I think it’s unlikely that we’ll never have another world war again. There probably will be at some point. … [Earth] could just be radioactive rubble.” He also joked that flying to Mars would have a similar appeal to the first attempts to explore Antarctica more than a century ago. Mr Musk said: “For the early people that go to Mars, it will be far more dangerous. It kind of reads like [Ernest] Shackleton’s ad for Antarctic explorers: Difficult, dangerous, good chance you’ll die. Excitement for those who survive.” The US innovator made headlines last month when one of SpaceX’s rockets successfully took his cherry-red Tesla convertible car into space. During the question and answer session Mr Musk named Kanye West, the rapper, and Fred Astaire, the dancer and actor, as among his inspirations. He also called for more regulation of artificial intelligence, saying: “I’m very close to the cutting edge in AI, and it scares the hell out of me. It’s capable of vastly more than almost anyone knows, and the rate of improvement is exponential.”

Austin package explosions: Third bomb hits city hosting South by Southwest as officials warn residents to be wary of unexpected packages
A third explosion has been linked to two other deadly attacks at homes in Texas this month, where police are warning residents not to touch any unexpected boxes that end up on their door steps. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley confirmed to reporters that the third blast — which followed just hours after an earlier deadly explosion Monday — is suspected of being connected to the recent explosions. "This, again, is the third in what we believe to be related incidents that have occurred in the past 10 days," Mr Manley said.

All hail Xi, China's 'Chairman of Everything'
Mao was the "Great Helmsman", Deng the "Paramount Leader" -- now meet Xi Jinping, whose growing personality cult has some calling him China's "Chairman of Everything". On Sunday, China's rubber-stamp parliament endorsed Xi's move to abolish rules limiting the head of state to 10 years in power, paving the way for another potential title: President for Life. Since taking over the Communist Party in 2012, Xi has steadily tightened his grip on virtually all aspects of the party, state apparatus and even how China's citizens should think.

Trump To Visit Ground Zero Of The Anti-Trump Resistance: California
Trump’s fraught relationship with California, where he has some of his lowest approval ratings, is sure to cast a shadow on the visit. Gov. Trump’s administration on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against California over its so-called sanctuary laws meant to protect undocumented immigrants.
