Correction: Veterans Home-Shooting story
YOUNTVILLE, Calif. (AP) — In a story March 9 about a fatal shooting at a California veterans' home, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Jennifer Golick phoned her husband to tell him a former patient was holding her captive. Her father-in-law, Bob Golick, told the AP the information in a telephone interview soon after Golick was taken hostage. The California Highway Patrol investigated the crime and found that there was no evidence Jennifer Golick called her husband while captive. That prompted AP to contact Bob Golick again. He acknowledged he had misinterpreted an emotional and disjointed phone conversation with his son, who had learned the identity of the man who took Golick hostage from others at the scene, not from his wife.

Front Bench: Britain has made its move against Russia, now it awaits the reaction
Today's Front Bench focuses on the Government's response to Russia. A sample of the email is below. If you like what you see, sign up here. Don't forget to vote in the poll and leave your reasoning in the comments below. The best responses will feature in this afternoon's Brexit Briefing. Theresa May set out Britain’s response to the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter yesterday after the deadline for Russia to respond came and went. The reaction to the Prime Minister's announcements was mixed, with a strong statement by America at the United Nations in support of Mrs May but far cooler words from France. Jeremy Corbyn found himself in hot water again after refusing to condemn Russia in the Commons, while his spokesman went further and claimed the UK's intelligence had been "problematic" in the past. Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson will make a major speech in Bristol this morning where he will reveal plans to offer an anthrax vaccination to troops. Planned restraint Some felt the Prime Minister could have gone further yesterday when she announced 23 Russian diplomats will be forced to leave the country but stopped short of widespread financial sanctions. There was, however, solid logic to this. May and her advisers are likely to have had three issues in mind when putting together the response. First, the need for due process. The UK can’t be seen to arbitrarily confiscate assets and private property. Second, Downing Street will have wanted to hold some options back in case further measures are needed. Third, there is a desire to build international backing – hence the PM’s clear effort in the Commons yesterday to frame the issue around the unprecedented, highly illegal use of a nerve agent on British soil. Building a coalition There was plenty of progress on building mutual support but at least one significant setback. Last night Britain put its case to the UN Security Council (on which Russia sits and has a veto). The US ambassador Nikki Hayley came out strongly in the UK’s favour and, in a line perfectly aligned with the UK’s diplomatic strategy, warned that without “immediate concrete measures" ... “[nerve agents] could be used here in New York or in cities of any country that sits on this council." There were contrarian voices, however. The Times splashes on the equivocation of French President Emmanuel Macron’s spokesman, who accused May of "fantasy politics" and said France would wait until “the elements are proven” before making any decisions. That echoed the line Jeremy Corbyn took in the Commons yesterday which has proved less than popular (see story below). The French stance may shift, with the PM set to speak to Macron directly today. Enter Williamson Meanwhile, Gavin Williamson will deliver a key speech later. It was not originally planned as a response to Russia and the bigger picture is the ongoing review into defence spending, which has seen a steady stream of senior officers and politicians calling for more money for the UK’s defence. However, the Defence Secretary will use the Skripal poisoning to make clear the threat Russia poses to Britain. While calling for more funding for defence, he will announce nearly £50m for a new chemical weapons defence centre (planned well before the events in Salisbury), and that thousands of frontline troops will be vaccinated against anthrax. What does Moscow think? So far Russia has, unsurprisingly, cast doubt on Britain’s accusations, telling the security council that the Kremlin had done no research or development “under the name Novichok” and suggesting the whole thing is a British conspiracy to “tarnish” the country. A similar sentiment was expressed to The Telegraph by a “trusted representative” of Vladimir Putin. Evgenny Primakov Jr. said that he was “absolutely certain” the attack was performed by the UK or US to discredit Russia’s presidential election on Sunday. That attempt at misinformation will likely form just one part of a wider fightback against UK measures. There are already fears of an escalation in tit-for-tat expulsions now that Britain has ordered 23 Russian diplomats, believed to be undeclared agents, to leave the UK. In 2017, when the US increased sanctions on Russia, Putin responded by ordering the expulsion of 755 US diplomats. The Prime Minister may well need those measures she held back on. Palestinian ramming attack kills 2 Israeli soldiers in West Bank: military
By Ali Samudi JENIN, West Bank (Reuters) - A Palestinian motorist rammed and killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded two others in the occupied West Bank on Friday, the Israeli military said. Novichokolate from Putin? Graffiti irony near Russian embassy tackles nerve attack
Opponents of President Vladimir Putin used graffiti on Thursday to take an ironic swipe at Russia over the nerve toxin attack on a former double agent. Britain and Russia have been trading public insults over the use of a Soviet-era nerve agent called Novichok to strike down former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the English city of Salisbury. "Dine at the Russian Embassy," read the white graffiti stenciled onto the pavement near the Russian embassy in London.

‘The sound was thundering’: Florida bridge collapse witnesses describe screams and chaos at scene
Witnesses of the bridge collapse at Florida International University in Miami have described a cloud of dust being sent into the air alongside a thunderous boom as the newly built, 950-tonne pedestrian structure smashed into the street below, trapping several vehicles. People could be heard screaming from the trapped cars underneath the rubble of the bridge as emergency responders arrived and began to search for survivors. “The sound was thundering,” Piqué Philips, who was driving on the fourth floor of a parking garage adjacent to the bridge, told The Independent.

S.Africa rages at Australia visa plan for 'persecuted' whites
South Africa summoned Australia's envoy to Pretoria Thursday to explain comments by a Canberra minister who suggested "persecuted" white farmers in the country should be offered fast-tracked humanitarian visas. Australia's Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who has drawn criticism for cracking down on asylum seekers from Asia and the Middle East, said white farmers could be admitted as refugees. Dutton made the offer in response to Pretoria's vow to enact land "expropriation without compensation" to redress land confiscations of the colonial and apartheid era.

Bridge collapses at Florida International University in Miami
Several people were killed and cars crushed when a newly installed pedestrian bridge spanning several lanes of traffic collapsed at Florida International University in Miami-Dade County, officials said. There were at least five to six vehicles crushed underneath the pedestrian crosswalk.
The bridge connects the university with the city of Sweetwater and was installed on Saturday in six hours over the eight-lane highway, according to a story that was posted on the university’s website. It was 174 feet (53 m) long and weighed 950 tons.
Television footage showed firefighters were walking across the flattened wreckage and medics were treating injured people. Emergency personnel appeared to be trying to work their way through a hole in the top of the bridge. (Reuters)

Survivors of Vietnam's My Lai massacre remember 'darkness and silence'
By James Pearson and Minh Nguyen QUANG NGAI, Vietnam (Reuters) - It took Pham Thi Thuan a while before she could muster the courage to fetch water from across the ditch where 170 of her neighbors, most of them women and children, were killed by U.S. troops during the Vietnam War. It was the worst recorded U.S. war crime committed in Vietnam, but preparations for a 50th anniversary ceremony at the site, now a memorial to the victims, are low key. Because of those better relations, Vietnam is not dwelling on the pain of the past, a senior Vietnamese government official told Reuters.

French arrest warrant out for Saudi crown prince's sister
The sister of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the target of a French arrest warrant for allegedly ordering her bodyguard to beat up a worker at her Paris apartment, legal sources said Thursday. The warrant against Princess Hassa bint Salman, issued in late December, follows an alleged assault at her apartment on the ultra-expensive Avenue Foch in west Paris in September 2016, sources close to the case told AFP. The case could complicate Macron's efforts to build up a good relationship with Prince Mohammed, one of the most powerful leaders in the Middle East, who is due to visit Paris in the coming weeks.

Nikolas Cruz stays silent in court as thousands of US students stage walkout in gun control protest
Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old accused of killing 17 people in the Florida school shooting last month, sat in court silently on Wednesday, while students across the nation walked out of school to protest gun violence, the sat in court silently, his head bowed. Shackled, wearing a red jail jumpsuit and with head bowed, Cruz sat motionless in the jury box and said nothing during a brief hearing. Because he refused to announce his plea, Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf on each of the 34 counts he faces - mainly to keep the legal process moving. His lawyer, Assistant Public Defender Melisa McNeill, reiterated that Cruz would plead guilty if prosecutors waived the death penalty, which they refused to do. If he pleaded guilty, McNeill said Cruz would accept a sentence of 34 life terms behind bars. It's still possible a plea deal could be reached. In the audience were several parents of shooting victims as well as Cruz's younger brother, Zachary. Cruz is accused of carrying out the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that also wounded 17 people in a case that has reignited a national debate about gun control and school safety. It also prompted Wednesday's nationwide walkout. Nikolas Cruz is lead out of the courtroom after an arraignment hearing at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale Credit: AP Tens of thousands of school pupils across the United States spilled out of their classrooms and demanded tighter gun control in one of the biggest student protests since the Vietnam era. Young people at nearly 3,000 separate schools and youth groups took part in the coast to coast National School Walkout as they called for measures including an assault weapons ban and universal background checks for gun buyers. The walkouts were staged at 10am in the different US time zones, meaning the entire event lasted for several hours. Many demonstrations were for 17 minutes, signifying one minute for each victim in Florida. Lewis Mizen, a Parkland survivor originally from Coventry in the UK, said the support had been "phenomenal". The 17-year-old, who moved to the US three years ago, added: "We're all standing up together as the next generation. We want to get the ball rolling, get things happening in Washington and in state capitols. He added: "Young people are that social media generation and it's easy to mobilise them in a way that it probably hadn't been even 10 years ago." They carried signs saying "I should be worrying about my grades, not my life" and "Protect kids not guns". Pupils then marched down Pennsylvania Avenue towards the US Capitol, passing the Trump International Hotel where they chanted "Hey hey, ho ho, the NRA has got to go!" Democrat politicians, including the party's Senate leader Chuck Schumer, and House leader Nancy Pelosi, walked out of Congress to address them outside the Capitol. Mr Schumer led the crowd in a chant of "We're going to win." Senator Bernie Sanders, the former Democratic presidential hopeful, also walked out and addressed them. Aaron Bergman, who was celebrating his 18th birthday and holding a "Gun Control Now" sign, added: "There are significant actions these legislators can take on the national level to reduce the access people have to firearms. It really matters a lot to me." The politicians have to realise that we can vote pretty soon and we can kick them out of office." Pupils also crammed into a packed hearing of the US Senate judiciary committee where the father of one of the Florida victims addressed senators. At New York City's Fiorello H LaGuardia High School pupils poured into the streets of Manhattan. Many were dressed in orange, the colour adopted in recent years by the gun- control movement. They chanted "Enough is enough." David Hogg, a survivor of the shooting, said: "Every one of these individuals could have died that day. I could have died that day." At Columbine High School in Colorado, where two pupils killed 13 people in 1999, young people also gathered on a football field and released balloons. Some school districts, including in Georgia and Ohio, threatened to discipline pupils who joined the protest, but many walked out anyway. In Bentonville, Arkansas, a high school pupil was suspended for promoting a walkout with flyers. MTV and some other youth TV networks went silent for 17 minutes to support the demonstrations.
