Gunmaker Remington files for bankruptcy
US gunmaker Remington filed for bankruptcy on Sunday, as the more than 200-year-old firearms manufacturer vies to restructure its massive debts. "Directors have determined that it is advisable and in the best interests of the Company that the Company file, or cause to be filed, a Voluntary Petition commencing the Chapter 11 Case," the bankruptcy filing says. Remington had announced it would file for bankruptcy in February, just two days before a shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school killed 17 people and reignited a national debate on gun control.

Orange snow baffles Eastern Europe
That's not an Instagram filter, that's orange snow! The orange-tinted snow covered parts of Eastern Europe on Friday and over the weekend, creating eerie post-Apocalyptic scenes in countries like Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova. There's a simple explanation: the rare phenomenon is caused by sand from Sahara desert storms mixing with snow and rain. It happens roughly once every five years but concentrations of sand are higher than usual this time.

Emergency fuel shutoff was tripped before NY helicopter fatal crash: pilot
An emergency fuel shut-off switch had been accidentally tripped moments before a fatal crash of a helicopter in New York's East River on March 11, a pilot told the National Transportation Safety Board in a preliminary report released Monday. The Eurocopter AS350 chartered by Liberty Helicopters of New Jersey crashed, killing all five passengers after a private photo shoot trip over New York City. The pilot, who escaped, also told the NTSB that the engine trouble started shortly after a passenger slid across the seat and leaned back to take a picture.

Pope Francis urges young people to speak out against elders
Pope Francis on Palm Sunday urged young people not to be silent and let their voices be heard, even in the face of corrupt or silent elders. The Pope's message yesterday came on the heels of a meeting of young Catholics who told the Vatican they want a more transparent and authentic church, and a day after hundreds of thousands marched in youth-led rallies across the United States to demand greater gun control. "The temptation to silence young people has always existed," Francis said. "There are many ways to silence young people and make them invisible. "There are many ways to sedate them, to keep them from getting involved, to make their dreams flat and dreary, petty and plaintive." But he told youths in his homily that "you have it in you to shout," even if "we older people and leaders, very often corrupt, keep quiet." Pope Francis encouraged young people to voice their concerns Credit: REUTERS/Tony Gentile As the Roman Catholic Church enters Holy Week, retracing the story of the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection three days later on Easter Sunday, Francis urged youth to join those who offer praise, and not the masses calling for crucifixion. "Dear young people, the joy that Jesus awakens in you is a source of anger and irritation to some, since a joyful person is hard to manipulate," the pontiff said. Some 300 youths meeting at the Vatican this week prepared a document for next October's synod of bishops at the Vatican focusing on to help youths better find their way in the church. Pope Francis held palm as he lead the Palm Sunday Mass in Saint Peter's Square Credit: REUTERS/Tony Gentile The document, which was presented to Francis on Sunday, asked church leaders to address the unequal roles of women in the church and how technology is abused. Before his traditional Sunday prayer at the end of Mass, the Pope recalled the importance World Youth Day, marked this year on Palm Sunday at a diocesan level rather than as a big international gathering. The Pope's message also resonated with the Saturday protests across the United States for tougher laws to fight gun violence, a movement galvanized by the school shooting last month in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. Thousands marched on Washington DC for the anti-gun-violence demonstration, March For Our Lives Credit: MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images At the end of Mass, the Pope and cardinals in red robes led a solemn procession clutching elaborately braided palm fronds as they walked through the throngs, followed by the papal blessing of palm fronds and olive branches. The processions recalls the bittersweet nature of Holy Week, with the faithful clutching simple palm fronds and olive branches to commemorate Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem only to be followed later by his death on a wooden cross. The Pope concluded by greeting the faithful in St. Peter's Square, getting out of the popemobile to shake hands as many cheered and took pictures.

Talks stall over last rebel-held zone in Syria's Ghouta
Talks over the fate of Douma, the final rebel-held zone in Syria's Eastern Ghouta, have stalled over divisions within the Islamist faction that holds the area, a monitor said Monday. Battered by a five-week regime offensive, two major rebel factions have agreed in recent days to leave other pockets of Ghouta for opposition-held territory in the country's northwest after talks with Russia. Negotiations are now underway with Islamist group Jaish al-Islam, which controls Ghouta's largest town, Douma.

Activists at gun control marches across America have signed up thousands of first-time voters pledging to eject lawmakers who oppose stricter firearms laws. Voter registration advocates were out in force as hundreds of thousands of people took part in more than 800 March for Our Lives rallies held across the US on Saturday. Organisers of the drive were aiming to sign up 25,000 young voters in favour of tougher gun control laws ahead of mid-term Congressional elections in eight months’ time.

Bataclan rocker accuses protesting Florida teens of treason
The frontman for the US rock band caught up in the 2015 jihadist attacks in Paris was berated Monday for an online rant accusing teenagers on the "March for Our Lives" anti-gun protests of treason. The nationwide demonstrations on Saturday were by far the largest in nearly two decades, part of a reignited gun control debate sparked by last month's killings at a Florida high school. The singer, known for his offensive rhetoric since the November 2015 attack on the Bataclan concert hall and other venues, posted five times on gun control and the march on Instagram over the weekend.

Flat-Earther blasts off into California sky in home-made steam rocket
A self-taught rocket scientist has blasted himself high into the California sky using a steam-powered contraption he built in his garage, the first step in his long-term aim of proving the Earth is flat. “Mad” Mike Hughes propelled himself 1,875 feet (571m) into the air above the vast Mojave desert in the homemade rocket before deploying his parachute and landing back to Earth with a bump. The madcap 61-year-old limo-driver-turned-daredevil was visibly dazed as he was carefully lifted from his seat and was checked over by paramedics as he lay exhausted on the ground following a hard landing which damaged the front of his rocket. “Am I glad I did it? Yeah. I guess,” he told the Associated Press. “I'll feel it in the morning. I won't be able to get out of bed. At least I can go home and have dinner and see my cats tonight.” The Flat-Earther, who has spent around $20,000 (£14,000) pursuing his rocket dream since 2016, admitted he was “relieved” to have finally achieved his goal following several aborted attempts and ridicule from some quarters when his plan captured the attention of the world’s media last year. "Mad" Mike Hughes' home-made rocket launches near Amboy, California Credit: Matt Hartman via AP “I'm tired of people saying I chickened out and didn't build a rocket. I'm tired of that stuff. I manned up and did it.” Acknowledging how dangerous the mission was, he added: “This thing wants to kill you 10 different ways … This thing will kill you in a heartbeat.” "Mad" Mike Hughes is carried on a stretcher after his home-made rocket launched and returned to the ground near Credit: Matt Hartman via AP Last year, the California native was forced to postpone a take off attempt from an abandoned runway in the ghost town of Amboy, located about 200 miles (321.85km) east of Los Angeles, due to his motorhome-slash-rocket launcher breaking down and problems getting a permit. Mr Hughes has the support of the flat-Earth community, who helped fund the mission, and eventually wants to build a "Rockoon," - a rocket that is carried into the atmosphere by a gas-filled balloon - to take him about 68 miles up so he can photograph the planet from space. The self-taught rocket scientist believes the Earth is flat Credit: Facebook “Do I believe the earth is shaped like a frisbee - or flat? I believe it is,” he said last year. “I cannot disprove it after my months of research. Do I know for sure? No. That’s why I want to go up into space 62 miles up to settle this thing once and for all for people who want to know.” “My story really is incredible,” Hughes reflected after his mission. “It's got a bunch of story lines - the garage-built thing. I'm an older guy. It's out in the middle of nowhere, plus the Flat Earth. The problem is it brings out all the nuts also, people questioning everything. It's the downside of all this.”

US students armed with buckets of rocks in defence against mass shootings
As tens of thousands of Americans march for tighter gun control laws, a Pennsylvania school district has turned to arming students with rocks as a “last line of defence” against mass shootings. The Blue Mountain School District in Schuylkill County has equipped 200 of its classrooms with buckets of river rocks in the event of a mass shooting. District superintendent David Helsel revealed the novel plan in a committee hearing on school safety on 15 March following last month’s shooting at a Florida high school where 17 people were killed. “Every classroom has been equipped with a five-gallon bucket full of river stone,” Mr Helsel told the hearing. “If an armed intruder attempts to gain entrance into any of our classrooms, they will face a classroom full of students armed with rocks and they will be stoned. “We have some people who have some pretty good arms. They can chuck some rocks pretty fast.” Mr Helsel explained the river stones were his idea and were placed in classrooms two years ago having initially considered using golf balls. “We chose to make it well known about the river stone because if it’s an existing student [they will] be aware that the chances are they’re going to be stoned severely if they try to do anything,” he added. “We didn’t want our students to be helpless victims,” he later told Reuters. “River stones were my idea. I thought they would be more effective than throwing books or book bags or staplers.” Mass shootings have become more frequent in the US Student survivors of the Florida school massacre attended a massive rally against gun violence Saturday in Washington, D.C. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students will be required to use clear backpacks when then return to school after spring as part of new security measures to prevent another mass shooting.

Young Catholics told their Church elders on Saturday that the faith should be spread in the places where they like to hang out, such as coffee bars. Mid-term battle at U.S. anti-gun marches: thousands register to vote
By Katanga Johnson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Voter registration activists fanned out among throngs of young Americans who marched for tighter gun laws on Saturday, signing up thousands of first-time voters who want to eject lawmakers who oppose gun control. With mid-term Congressional elections eight months away, the activists flocked to some 800 marches across the country to register young voters likely to back Democratic and independent candidates who tend to favor tougher firearms laws. In Washington, volunteers for the HeadCount voter-registration effort raised their fists and chanted "demonstration without registration leads to frustration" before heading out with clipboards to sign up some of the nation's newest voters.
