Elon Musk admits robots are slowing down Tesla production – and says humans are the answer

Elon Musk admits robots are slowing down Tesla production – and says humans are the answerElon Musk has said that “excessive automation” is partly to blame for the serious backlog in production of Tesla cars, noting that human beings can in some situations do a better job. Mr Musk has come under fierce criticism for the delays facing his Model 3 sedan. “Yes, excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake,” he said. “To be precise, my mistake. Humans are underrated.” Caught in what Mr Musk has called “manufacturing hell”, the electric car firm has failed to hit its weekly production target of 2,500 Model 3 vehicles in the first quarter of 2018, fostering doubt within the industry that Tesla will be able to hit its 5,000-a-week target in three months time. “We had this crazy, complex network of conveyor belts. And it was not working, so we got rid of that whole thing," he said. "We got complacent about some of the things that we felt were our core technology. “We put too much new technology into the Model 3 all at once. This should have been staged." In February Elon Musk sent a red Tesla into space Credit: SpaceX Mr Musk, on a tour of the factory for CBS News, admitted that he sometimes slept at the factory when he was overwhelmed with work, and said the criticism was affecting him. "When things get really intense, I don't have time to go home and shower and change, so I just sleep here," the tech billionaire said. "Last time I was here, I actually slept literally on the floor, because the couch was too narrow." In the past month, Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of 123,000 of its older Model S vehicles, dealt with a fatal crash of a vehicle equipped with its semi-autonomous driving system and suffered a downgrade of its credit status. But Mr Musk said his immediate priority was solving production delays for the company's Model 3 sedan. "I'm definitely under stress, so if I seem like I'm not under stress then I'm going to be clear, I'm definitely under stress," he said.

Starbucks apologises as outrage grows at arrest of two black men while they waited for friend

Starbucks apologises as outrage grows at arrest of two black men while they waited for friendStarbucks has apologised to two black men who were arrested while waiting for a friend at one of its branches in Philadelphia. Cellphone footage shows the pair being placed in handcuffs and led quietly from the store while perplexed onlookers can be heard saying they had done nothing wrong. An apology issued at the weekend was not enough to prevent demonstrators gathering to highlight Thursday incident and what they said was yet another example of how black people are still treated as second-class citizens in America. It is an embarrassing episode to a coffee chain that styles itself as a hang-out for people to meet and linger. Kevin Johnson, Starbucks chief executive, described the video as "hard to watch" and the arrests as a "reprehensible outcome". We apologize to the two individuals and our customers for what took place at our Philadelphia store on Thursday. pic.twitter.com/suUsytXHks— Starbucks Coffee (@Starbucks) April 14, 2018 "Our store manager never intended for these men to be arrested and this should never have escalated as it did," he said in a statement, adding that he wanted to apologise personally to the two men although he declined to explain why the actions escalated so quickly. @Starbucks The police were called because these men hadn’t ordered anything. They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing. All the other white ppl are wondering why it’s never happened to us when we do the same thing. pic.twitter.com/0U4Pzs55Ci— Melissa DePino (@missydepino) April 12, 2018 Police said they received a 911 complaint of trespassing and responding officers were told the two men had asked to use the lavatory without making a purchase. Richard Ross, police commissioner, said the men said they were waiting for a friend and refused to leave. A Starbucks spokesman said the store had a policy of only allowing customers to use the lavatories. Demonstrators at the Philadelphia branch on Sunday Credit: Getty Images The local district attorney's office said the men were released after Starbucks declined to press charges. Even so, the arrests caused outrage around the US as details spread across social media. The Rev Jeffrey Jordan led a crowd of protesters outside the Philadelphia branch in chants of "I am somebody, and I demand equality now." Schultz puff "It is a shame that (in) the year 2018 we're still putting up with this mess," he said. "This country was built on the backs of black and brown people and now Starbucks is going to treat us like we're second class." Robert Passikoff, the president of Brand Keys, a New York-based consulting firm that researches brand loyalty, said the fiasco illustrated the dilemma faced by Starbucks as it tried to be both a business and a modern kind of community centre. "Companies have gone out of their way to establish the kind of emotional bonds and product delivery that they think is going to build engagement and loyalty and, ultimately, profits," he said. "But today the consumer decides what is right."

US to impose new sanctions on Russia in wake of Syria chemical attack, says UN ambassador Nikki HaleyWashington will impose new sanctions on Russia, US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has said – as Western allies look to put some diplomatic clout behind military strikes launched on Syria in the wake of an apparent chemical weapon attack. “Russian sanctions will be coming down,” Ms Haley said during on appearance on CBS’ Face the Nation, adding that the new sanctions are expected to be announced by treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin on Monday. It comes as the US, UK and France – who took part in the retaliatory strikes – push a draft resolution ahead of a meeting of the UN’s Security Council, also on Monday, which includes a proposal for an independent investigation into alleged chemical weapons attacks that identifies those responsible.

The three allies have produced a draft resolution that will be debated by the Security Council in New York, although it remains unclear when the vote will take place. It comes as Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said new sanctions would be imposed on Russian businesses that help the Assad regime make and deploy chemical weapons. The proposed UN resolution includes a request for an independent investigation into the toxic gas attacks which killed more than forty civilians earlier this month and safe passage for aid convoys and medical evacuations. A fact-finding team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons arrived in Damascus to "begin work" on Saturday, according to the organisation's Twitter feed. France's ambassador to the United Nations, Francois Delattre, said that Syria's chemical weapons program must be dismantled in a "verifiable and irreversible way." "We must spare no effort to set up an international attribution mechanism, prevent impunity, and stop any repeat attempts by the Syrian regime." "This (a chemical attack) very easily could happen in the United States if we're not smart, and if we're not conscious of what's happening," she said. She also said that a new raft of Russian sanctions would be outlined Monday, by Steve Mnuchin, US treasury secretary. "They will be going directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to [Bashar] Assad and chemical weapons use," she told CBS News. Syria strikes | Read latest Western diplomats are preparing for diplomatic efforts to convince Russia to vote for a ceasefire. Moscow has used its veto 12 times to block action targeting its Syrian ally. Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French foreign minister, said renewed peace efforts should “begin with a ceasefire which is really respected this time.”  A ceasefire in February failed. President Emmanuel Macron was expected to strike a similar tone in a television interview on Sunday night. Mr Macron is seeking to position himself as a broker between Russia and the Western powers. France has maintained regular contacts with Russia despite heightened tensions. Hours before the strikes, the French president discussed Syria in a phone call with Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart. Mr Macron said he intended to go ahead with a planned state visit to Moscow at the end of next month. Next week he is to be hosted by Donald Trump on a state visit. In Germany, the president warned against a “dangerous alienation” from Russia, as tensions grow between the country and the West. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a Social Democrat (SPD) politician, told the country's Bild am Sonntag newspaper that "we should not designate Russia in general, the country and its people, as an enemy".
