Listen to how Tammie Jo Shults, hero pilot of Southwest 1380, kept calm and saved her passengers
Audio of the Southwest Airlines incident has emerged, showing how pilot Tammie Jo Shults remained completely calm after an engine exploded and a woman passenger was nearly sucked out of the plane. It is believed that one woman, Jennifer Riordan, died in the initial engine explosion, which sent shrapnel smashing into the Boeing 737-700, but Ms Shults, whose experience includes being one of the first female fighter pilots in the US Navy, was able to get all the other passengers to safety.

Intruders storm Nigerian parliament and snatch mace: Senate spokesman
By Camillus Eboh ABUJA (Reuters) - Three men burst into Nigeria's Senate on Wednesday and snatched the legislature's ceremonial mace, in an incident the body's spokesman blamed on a lawmaker who had been suspended. Decisions taken in the Senate cannot be approved without the mace, an ornamental staff symbolising the authority of the legislature. "Today, some hoodlums led by suspended senator Ovie Omo-Agege walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the upper legislative chamber, the mace," Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, spokesman for the upper house, said in a statement.

Immunotherapy-first cancer treatment a 'game-changer', say scientists
Cancer patients should be given thorough immunotherapy before undergoing surgery to remove dangerous tumours, a new trial suggests. A study on lung cancer patients found that activating the immune system can prompt tumours into spreading friendly T-cells around the body, significantly reducing the chance of cancer returning after surgery. Scientists have hailed the new approach, called “cancer interception”, a “game-changer” potentially capable of stopping the disease in its tracks. Teams are now setting out to trial the method on patients with blood, colon and ovarian cancers in what could be the start of a fundamental shift in treatment of the disease. Oncologists at Johns Hopkins University and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center administered the immunotherapy drug nivolumab over several weeks to 21 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer prior to surgery. They found the strategy was not only safe, but that 45 per cent of the patients responded so well there was little evidence of the cancer remaining upon follow-up examinations. Overall, recurrence-free survival at 18 months was 73 per cent. This is compared to a roughly 50 per cent current clinical average. In numbers | Cancer in the UK The team believe the key to the success are the T cells circulating through the patients’ bodies after surgery which attack errant tumour cells and prevent new metastases. They said the nivolumab effectively converted the lung tumours into an “auto-vaccine”, pumping the cancer-killing cells around the body. "That T-cells, activated by immunotherapy prior to surgery, can intercept rogue tumor cells throughout the body after the patient's operation and prevent the cancer from recurring may be a game-changer,” said Dr Sung Poblete, President of Stand Up To Cancer, which funded the research. "This notion of 'cancer interception' has the potential to stop cancer in its tracks.” “We are hopeful that this breakthrough, and the follow-up clinical studies already underway, will translate into a new standard of care." Traditionally, chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy has been given to lung cancer patients to shrink a large, non-metastasized tumor. Immunotherapeutic agents have then been administered after surgery, but with limited results. The Study is being presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting and published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Alison Cook, Director of Policy for the British Lung Foundation, said: “This research is so full of hope, for all of those people who are going to face lung cancer. People can feel encouraged to come forward if they have worrying symptoms knowing that their chances of being cured are going to be significantly better with this treatment alongside surgery. "Early diagnosis is so vital in the fight against lung cancer, and often people with symptoms delay seeing a doctor due to fear of invasive, painful treatments that might do little in the end to improve their chances. Treatment tomorrow is going to look very different from what’s on offer today - more lives will be saved.”

U.S. suggests Russia, Syria may tamper with Douma evidence, Moscow denies it
By Laila Bassam and Anthony Deutsch DAMASCUS/THE HAGUE (Reuters) - The United States accused Russia on Monday of blocking international inspectors from reaching the site of a suspected poison gas attack in Syria and said Russians or Syrians may have tampered with evidence on the ground. Moscow denied the charge and blamed delays on retaliatory U.S.-led missile strikes on Syria on Saturday. British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron faced criticism from political opponents over their decisions to take part in the air strikes.

Names of members of Japan WWII 'germ warfare' unit to be released
A group of Japanese scholars is set to reveal the names of the members of a Japanese World War II germ warfare unit that infected and starved Chinese and allied POWs in a series of gruesome experiments. Katsuo Nishiyama, professor emeritus of Shiga University of Medical Science in western Japan, has told local media his team is analysing a list of 3,607 members and plans to publish it online to encourage further historical study of the unit. "This is the first time that we see a list of the names of nearly all its members being released in the form of an official document," the Mainichi Shimbun daily quoted Nishiyama as saying.

Beauty queen wife voices concerns for 'El Chapo' health
The young wife of accused Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman on Tuesday spoke publicly for the first time since her husband was extradited to the United States last year, voicing concern for his health in solitary confinement. Emma Coronel, a 28-year-old former beauty queen and mother of the couple's twin girls, complained after his latest pre-trial hearing in a Brooklyn federal court about being barred from visiting her husband in jail or talking to him by telephone. Guzman, 61, accused of running the Sinaloa crime syndicate, one of the world's biggest drug empires, is scheduled to go on trial on September 5.

Boy unearths legendary king Bluetooth's trove who brought Christianity to Denmark
A 13-year-old boy and an amateur archaeologist have unearthed a "significant" treasure trove in Germany which may have belonged to the legendary Danish king Harald Bluetooth who brought Christianity to Denmark. Rene Schoen and his student Luca Malaschnitschenko were looking for treasure using metal detectors in January on northern Ruegen island when they chanced upon what they initially thought was a worthless piece of aluminium. But upon closer inspection, they realised that it was a shimmering piece of silver, German media reported. A dig covering 400 square metres (4,300 square feet) that finally started over the weekend by the regional archaeology service has since uncovered a trove believed linked to the Danish king who reigned from around 958 to 986. Braided necklaces, pearls, brooches, a Thor's hammer, rings and up to 600 chipped coins were found, including more than 100 that date back to Bluetooth's era. Amateur archaeologist Rene Schoen, left, and 13-year-old student Luca Malaschnichenko at the dig where the coins were found Credit: STEFAN SAUER/ DPA "This trove is the biggest single discovery of Bluetooth coins in the southern Baltic sea region and is therefore of great significance," lead archaeologist Michael Schirren told national news agency DPA. The oldest coin found in the trove is a Damascus dirham dating to 714 while the most recent is a penny dating to 983. The find suggests that the treasure may have been buried in the late 980s - also the period when Bluetooth was known to have fled to Pomerania where he died in 987. "We have here the rare case of a discovery that appears to corroborate historical sources," said archaeologist Detlef Jantzen. Bluetooth is credited with unifying Denmark. The Viking-born king also turned his back on old Norse religion and introduced Christianity to the Nordic country. But he was forced to flee to Pomerania after a rebellion led by his son Sven Gabelbart. Bluetooth's lasting legacy is found today in smartphones and laptops - the wireless Bluetooth technology is named after him, and the symbol is composed of the two Runes spelling out his initials R. B.

Merkel's tougher Russia stance meets resistance in Germany
By Markus Wacket and Thomas Escritt BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Europe minister called on Monday for a new policy of easing tensions with Russia, adding to a chorus of voices pressing Chancellor Angela Merkel to moderate her hardened stance towards the Kremlin. The conservative chancellor swung behind Britain after the poison attack on a former Russian double agent in England last month, expelling four diplomats despite uneasiness among a political class that is wary of confrontation with Germany's giant eastern neighbour. Europe Minister Michael Roth, a member of the Social Democrat party (SPD), said that while the European Union needed a united front on Russia, sanctions should aim to bring Moscow to the negotiating table.

Is the F-35 Now the Ultimate Drone Killer?
An F-35 used sensors, on-board computers and targeting systems to find, track and destroy two airborne drones at once. Previous test data and observers have confirmed the F-35 identified and targeted the drone with its mission systems sensors, passed the target ‘track’ information to the missile, enabled the pilot to verify targeting information using the high off-boresight capability of the helmet mounted display and launched the AIM-9X from the aircraft to engage the target drone, a statement from the F-35 JPO said. When a single F-35 used sensors, on-board computers and targeting systems to find, track and destroy two airborne drones at the same time with air-to-air missiles, the emerging 5th Gen fighter transitioned into a new era for offensive attack missions.
