Transport hub UAE says Qatar fighter jets harassing civil aviationThe United Arab Emirates said two Qatari fighter jets "dangerously approached" an Emirati passenger flight and a civilian helicopter on Monday, sparking a swift denial by Doha in the latest such incident between the Gulf rivals. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority condemned the "reckless manner" in which the Qatari fighter jets purportedly harassed its planes. "The distance was so close that the traffic collision avoidance system was triggered," said Ismail al-Blooshi, assistant director of the aviation authority's safety affairs division.

U.S. Military Admits Its "Helpless" Against a Hypersonic Missile Strike by China or RussiaThe United States defense establishment has not stopped ringing alarm bells on what they say are rising threats posed by Russia and China, and their warnings are prompting fear among members of Congress. Last week, US military officials and lawmakers highlighted hypersonic missiles as a particular area of concern. “Right now, we’re helpless,” Republican Senator James Inhofe, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was quoted by The Hill as saying in advocating for more funding for hypersonic missiles.

New Zealand says it can't find Russian spies to expel

New Zealand says it can't find Russian spies to expelNew Zealand said on Tuesday it would like to expel Russian spies in retaliation for allegedly poisoning an ex-agent in Britain - only it can't find any Moscow operatives in the country. Scores of Russian diplomats have been ordered from the United States, Canada, Australia and various European countries in the wake of the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury. New Zealand, a former British colony and staunch London ally, offered in-principle support but admitted a lack of Russian spy activity meant there was little action it could take. "We have done a check in New Zealand. We don't have Russian undeclared intelligence officers here. If we did, we would expel them," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told state radio. "When there's a range of international interests ... does it surprise me New Zealand is not top of their list? No, actually." Ardern said New Zealand "will keep under review what further actions it can take to support the international community over the Salisbury attack". Russia has denied it was behind the attempted assassination, which left Skripal and his daughter gravely ill in perhaps the first nerve agent attack in Europe since World War II. Mapped: Russian diplomats expelled from West New Zealand is a member of the "Five Eyes" intelligence-sharing network, which also includes the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia. Ms Ardern's comments came as Australia moved to expel two Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning. The United States said on Monday it would expel 60 Russian diplomats, joining governments across Europe in punishing the Kremlin. In total, 100 Russian diplomats were being removed, the biggest Western expulsion of Russian diplomats since the height of the Cold War. Australia followed suit on Tuesday. Julie Bishop, the foreign minister, said further measures, such as Australia boycotting the 2018 World Cup in Russia, could also be taken over the poisoning incident - but later rowed back on the threat. Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister, said: "Together with the United Kingdom and other allies and partners, Australia is taking action in response to the recent nerve agent attack in Salisbury, UK. "Two Russian diplomats identified as undeclared intelligence officers will be expelled by the Australian government for actions inconsistent with their status, pursuant to the Vienna Conventions." Australia has already imposed a series of sanctions against Russia following the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 and the Russian annexing of parts of Ukraine in 2014. Traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, MH17 which was shot down in 2014 killing all 298 passengers and crew. Most of the victims were Dutch and 28 were Australians. International prosecutors concluded the airliner was shot down by a missile fired from a launcher brought into Ukraine from Russia and located in a village held by pro-Russian rebels, contradicting Moscow’s suggestion that Ukraine’s military brought down the plane.

Pope Francis urges young people to speak out against elders

Pope Francis urges young people to speak out against eldersPope Francis on Palm Sunday urged young people not to be silent and let their voices be heard, even in the face of corrupt or silent elders. The Pope's message yesterday came on the heels of a meeting of young Catholics who told the Vatican they want a more transparent and authentic church, and a day after hundreds of thousands marched in youth-led rallies across the United States to demand greater gun control. "The temptation to silence young people has always existed," Francis said. "There are many ways to silence young people and make them invisible.  "There are many ways to sedate them, to keep them from getting involved, to make their dreams flat and dreary, petty and plaintive." But he told youths in his homily that "you have it in you to shout," even if "we older people and leaders, very often corrupt, keep quiet." Pope Francis encouraged young people to voice their concerns Credit: REUTERS/Tony Gentile As the Roman Catholic Church enters Holy Week, retracing the story of the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection three days later on Easter Sunday, Francis urged youth to join those who offer praise, and not the masses calling for crucifixion. "Dear young people, the joy that Jesus awakens in you is a source of anger and irritation to some, since a joyful person is hard to manipulate," the pontiff said. Some 300 youths meeting at the Vatican this week prepared a document for next October's synod of bishops at the Vatican focusing on to help youths better find their way in the church. Pope Francis held palm as he lead the Palm Sunday Mass in Saint Peter's Square  Credit: REUTERS/Tony Gentile The document, which was presented to Francis on Sunday, asked church leaders to address the unequal roles of women in the church and how technology is abused. Before his traditional Sunday prayer at the end of Mass, the Pope recalled the importance World Youth Day, marked this year on Palm Sunday at a diocesan level rather than as a big international gathering. The Pope's message also resonated with the Saturday protests across the United States for tougher laws to fight gun violence, a movement galvanized by the school shooting last month in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. Thousands marched on Washington DC for the anti-gun-violence demonstration, March For Our Lives Credit: MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images At the end of Mass, the Pope and cardinals in red robes led a solemn procession clutching elaborately braided palm fronds as they walked through the throngs, followed by the papal blessing of palm fronds and olive branches. The processions recalls the bittersweet nature of Holy Week, with the faithful clutching simple palm fronds and olive branches to commemorate Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem only to be followed later by his death on a wooden cross. The Pope concluded by greeting the faithful in St. Peter's Square, getting out of the popemobile to shake hands as many cheered and took pictures.
