China's Xi tells Zimbabwe president they should write "new chapter" in ties
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday told President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe that they should work towards a new chapter in ties, during the African leader's first state visit to China since he seized power last year. Mnangagwa, who was sworn in as president in November after a de facto military coup ended Robert Mugabe's 37-year rule, has vowed to rebuild his country’s ravaged economy and re-engage with the international community. China had considered Mugabe a "good friend" in a relationship dating back to its support for Zimbabwe's independence war, but pointedly failed to support him when he was ousted.

'Affluenza' Texan, who killed four driving drunk, released from jail
A Texan who killed four people while driving drunk as a teen, then avoided prison by blaming his wealthy upbringing, was released from jail on Monday after serving nearly two years for violating probation in the case, officials said. Ethan Couch garnered international attention in 2013 as the "affluenza teen" when his lawyers argued his privileged childhood impaired his ability to tell right from wrong. Now 20, he walked free from a jail in Fort Worth, where he served time after fleeing to Mexico and then being found in violation of the probation he received for the fatal crash.

Police officer's car hits protester during rally over killing of unarmed black man Stephon Clark
A woman protesting over the police killing of an unarmed black man has been struck by the car of a sheriff's deputy. Video filmed by a bystander showed the vehicle edging along the road before hitting the protester at a vigil for Stephon Clark, who was shot dead last month in his grandparents’ backyard in Sacramento, California. Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it had launched an internal review of the collision, which is also under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Bahrain makes largest oil discovery in its history
Bahrain on Sunday announced it has discovered the largest oil and gas field in the history of the small kingdom, which unlike its Gulf neighbours is not energy-rich. "The new resource is forecast to contain highly significant quantities of tight (light crude) oil and deep gas, dwarfing Bahrain's current reserves," said the country's Higher Committee for Natural Resources, which is chaired by Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad. The find in the Khaleej al-Bahrain, off the west coast, was "the largest discovery of oil in the country's history", it said in a statement.

U.S. safety agency criticizes Tesla crash data release
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said on Sunday it was "unhappy" that electric car maker Tesla Inc made public information about the crash of its Model X vehicle on Autopilot that killed the driver last month. The agency "needs the cooperation of Tesla to decode the data the vehicle recorded," NTSB spokesman Chris O'Neil said in a statement. "However, the NTSB is unhappy with the release of investigative information by Tesla," he added.

Israel rejects calls for independent probe of Gaza violence
Israel rejected calls for an independent probe on Sunday after its soldiers killed 16 Palestinians and wounded hundreds more when a major demonstration led to clashes along the border with the Gaza Strip. Israel's military has faced questions from rights groups over its use of live fire on Friday, the bloodiest day in the conflict since a 2014 war, while Palestinians accused soldiers of firing on protesters posing no threat. Both UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini have called for an independent investigation.

Get Ready, Russia: The Navy Wants to Build 3 Nuclear Attack Submarines Per Year
The Navy hopes to increase its current submarine construction op-tempo and build as many as three Virginia-class submarines per year to more rapidly address the services’ attack submarine deficit. The previous status quo had been for the Navy to drop from building two Virginia-Class boats per year to one in the early 2020s when construction of the new Columbia-Class nuclear armed submarines begins. The service then moved to a plan to build two Virginia-class submarines and one Columbia-class submarine concurrently, according to findings from a Navy assessment.

US Supreme Court nixes $655 million jury award against the PLO
The US Supreme Court Monday rejected a bid to make the Palestine Liberation Organization pay $655 million in damages to victims of six attacks in Israel. The court's decision aligned with the view of President Donald Trump's administration, which in this case saw no reason for the high court to intervene despite strains in US relations with the PLO. The court upheld a New York appeals court ruling that in 2016 found that the US courts lacked jurisdiction over attacks in Israel, even though Americans were among the dead and wounded.

Royals attend church without Duke of Edinburgh on Easter Sunday
The Duke of Edinburgh was absent from this year's Easter service at Windsor attended by the Queen. Philip, who has effectively retired from royal duties, was absent from the Easter Mattins Service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle - where Prince Harry will marry Meghan Markle in May. It is understood he was not due to attend the service. The church service is the latest event the 96-year-old duke has been absent from in recent days and it is understood that he has been experiencing some trouble with his hip. The Queen was joined by members of the royal family including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who were there without their children. The Queen receives flowers from two girls after the service Credit: AFP/TOLGA AKMEN William and Kate were the final royals to arrive at the church - arriving after the Queen and other family members had already gone in - and a few minutes after the 10.45am start time. Kate looked elegant in a classic dark coat and matching hat as she made her way into the 14th-century Gothic chapel inside the castle walls. The Duchess, who is expected to give birth to her third child this month, is now on maternity leave. Easter Sunday celebrations around the world, in pictures Harry and Meghan were not at the service, with Kensington Palace describing their weekend plans as "private". Members of the public waited outside the chapel as the 91-year-old monarch arrived. Prince Andrew and his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie attended the Easter service, along with Eugenie's fiance Jack Brooksbank. Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn, Prince Edward, the Countess of Wessex and their children Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, also attended the service. Princess Eugenie and Princess Anne Credit: SIMON DAWSON/ REUTERS It is understood Philip missed the annual Maundy Service on Thursday because of a problem with his hip. It is not thought to be a serious issue as Philip, who was named as a guest in the order of service for the Maundy Thursday event, was spotted driving in Windsor Great Park on Wednesday. Last week, Philip pulled out of an official engagement with the Queen and Duke of York because he was unwell, according to reports. He was due to attend an event at Windsor Castle to mark Andrew's new role as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards but was unable to attend because he was feeling "under the weather", the Daily Mail reported. He stepped down from his public duties last summer but on occasion does attend events with the Queen. When it was announced last year that he would be retiring from official engagements, Buckingham Palace stressed that the decision was not health-related and he had the full support of the Queen.

It's Time to Accept That Assad Is Not Going Anywhere
While rebel factions are still in control of several provinces and a significant stretch of the Syrian countryside, their goal of overthrowing the regime is no longer plausible. It was always a matter of when, not if, Syria’s rebel factions in the Eastern Ghouta suburbs laid down their arms and surrendered to Bashar al-Assad’s forces. What is commonly depicted in the West as the mainstream Syrian armed opposition has been squeezed of hope, bloodied, worn out, and beaten after seven years of all-out military assault by the Assad, Russia and Iran.
